Ethernet cables are an essential part of your digital infrastructure. In this post, we cover why you should strongly consider investing in Cat6a ethernet cables to increase the capacity of your network. We discuss cat6a basics and the advantages over the common, outdated cabling solutions.

What is Cat6a Cabling?

Cat6a, or augmented category 6, is a type of ethernet cable that supports the transfer of 10 gigabits per second at speeds of 500 MHz with a range of 328 feet.

The cable features additional and tighter twists along with more insulation to handle cross talk. Cat6a cables are also backward compatible with Cat5e and Cat6 ethernet cables, but speeds are limited to the lowest category cable or the connector at the link.

In the past, the disadvantage of running Cat6a cable was the size and weight. When the new technology was released around 2008, it was 50% larger than modern Cat6a cables.

Today, slimmed-down Cat6a cables offer the most cost-effective solution relative to functionality and the ability to handle future technologies.

Common Types of Ethernet Cables

Most common ethernet cables are still Category 5. The solution is cheap and readily available; however, speeds are slow and don’t accommodate the needs of most modern businesses or even online gaming.

Cat6 is a major improvement with the ability to transfer 10 gigabits per second at 250 MHz up to 164 feet. While Cat6 remains the standard for new installations, there are clear advantages to upgrading your infrastructure.

The Difference Between Cat6 and Cat6a

The jump from Cat6 Ethernet cabling to Cat6a is dramatic; bandwidth and distance double, creating more opportunities to scale and utilize new network applications.

Networks like data centers, hospitals, and universities that use an abundance of cable require alien crosstalk shielding (ATX), which is only supported with Cat6a cabling and above. In addition, Cat6a is required to handle expansive, complex networks such as closed-circuit surveillance systems and PoE applications.

Advantages of Cat6a Ethernet Cables

Preparation for future technology is the most significant advantage of upgrading your network. While it’s impossible to predict exactly what changes will come in the next 2-5 years, you can bet that new solutions that handle complex data sets will require more bandwidth to run effectively.

Accommodates Upgrades

Access to more data offers your organization a competitive edge; however, if your network doesn’t provide the processing power to handle new, powerful technology, you won’t be able to capitalize.

While your network may accommodate the data you are processing today, more bandwidth is inevitable.

Wireless Router is Optional

Extended range means more ways to create high-speed connections. For example, cat6a Cables can reach every room or office in your building, providing a much more reliable and faster connection to the internet.

Optimize Your Network Infrastructure with Cat6a

The rapid digitalization of the economy and the rise of automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning applications require advanced network infrastructure. Investing in Cat6e cabling today will prepare your organization or personal network for future solutions that require more bandwidth.
